Reading a Plot's Drainage in Winter

Water tells you more about a plot in December than any soil test in June.

Water tells you more about a plot in December than any soil test in June. Walk the beds after heavy rain and note where the puddles linger, where the moss creeps, where the worms have given up.

Winter drainage work is slow work: a trench here, a raised bed there, a season of watching before you dig. The plot keeps its own ledger, and it does not mind being read slowly.
